In the last year underage sales in Brent and Harrow included 29 of alcohol, three with knives, four sales of tobacco along with the sale of fireworks, DVDs, a video and three national lottery tickets. In response to this problem a new initiative, the Responsible Traders Scheme, which aims to stop retailers selling age restricted products to youngsters, will be launched on 7 September 2007 by Brent and Harrow Trading Standards. Bill Bilon, Director of Trading Standards, said: "It is disappointing that some traders still break the law and continue to sell banned products to children. "We hope our new initiative will reduce these types of sales and we encourage traders to participate. By educating businesses we also aim to help combat other problems with antisocial behaviour connected with age restricted products.” The Responsible Traders Scheme is part of an ongoing program of business advice offered to retailers in the two boroughs who sell age restricted products.
